In the spirit of that god awful question--one which the interviewers always seem to ask Andy after he's been knocked out of a slam--"where does this dissapointment rank amongst your other losses", I decided to create a poll to see which loss upset you most.

Please note, only grand slam losses in recent memory were included.
Moreover, only matches in which I thought Andy was the favourite were included in the poll. So, whilst losing to Roger in the final was dissapointing, it wasn't necessarily a dissapointment. If you understand what I mean. Also, It would have been a rather lopsided poll if I had included Andy's two grand slam losses in the Final.

Hi guys, like all of you I was utterly gutted at the result last night, there is no way Andy should be losing, with his talent, to a player like Wawrinka. Not in a Grand Slam event!

The problem is that he has no "go to" person on his bench. He's a unique talent and has more natural ability than almost any player I have seen play the game. That in itself poses a problem when it comes to coaching. The problem being he needs a coach he can look up to and trust implicitly. One that he can look to the bench and think ......"he knows how to win in this situation and I'm going to show him I can do it too!"

It sounds simplistic but everyone who has played sport will tell you the mental lift it can give you having a hero/mentor coaching you and watching you play. You run a bit quicker, you recover a bit quicker, you're a bit more focused, you complain less, injuries don't hurt as much and you win more points! Now, while Miles McClagan, Brad Gilbert and Mark Petchey have all played a part in Andy's progress there's not one of them that did anything of note in the game of tennis. Gilbert made the greatest progress in the Slams out of the three of them but even that was only to the quarters of Wimbledon and the US Open once!

It's bugged me for a while knowing there was something missing from his game but not quite being able to put my finger on it. I constantly defend him while friends cast doubts on his ability to close the deal but it's getting harder and harder to do so when performances like last night pop their heads above the parapet.

The problem became crystal clear last night. When Andy was in all sorts of trouble, he looked across to his camp in the corner of the Louis Armstrong stadium and smiled/laughed!! Does he do the same if he has a coach such as Jimmy Connors looking back at him? No way! Not in a million years. If he has a guy like Connors looking back at him he sucks it up and gets on with it coz he knows there's no excuse he can give to a guy like Connors that will wash with him.

Andy's problem doesn't lie with his ability to play tennis, that's never been up for debate. It most certainly lies between his ears. He needs a coach of huge standing in the game and he needs him very very quickly.

Can anyone here say the injuries Andy had (which he made no huge complaint about in the post match PC) would've stopped Nadal winning that match from the same position? That's the difference between a winner and a Grand Slam winner.

GET CONNORS IN YOUR CORNER NOW ANDY!

Perhaps to be learnt from the US Hard Court Stretch....

To start off, would just like to say that Andy's third round opponent and victor Stan obviously benefitted from his coach's very astute tactics.
Perhaps fair to say we did not see today's result coming either. Perhaps also fair to say that although Andy won his first two matches easily, the real tournament started today. Unfortunately it also ended today.
What is to be learnt for the AO next January?

After Dreddy comes Stan the Man ... at least in Andy's US Open draw.

The 25th seed came through his match in 3 sets (7'5, 6'3, 6'4) taking just over 2 and 1/4hrs to despatch Chela and mirroring Andy's winning score over Dustin Dreddy Brown (7'5, 6'3, 6'0 but in 1hr, 25mins).

The two friends will meet 9th time in their careers and it's Muzzah who holds a 5-3 H2H; make that 5-1 without the 2 wins on clay by Stan.
Their last encounter was a R16 epic at Wimbledon 2009 which Andy won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and the odds are stacked in his favour here in NYC should their match go past 3 sets.

Would be great if this were the night match but with Isner, and possibly Querrey, in the frame for the American popcorn slots that might be unlikely.

Anyhow - it'll be on Sunday so we'll look forward to your company!

After a blistering start to his US Open campaign Andy has a day to prepare for his R2 match - and is probably headed for an ice-bath pdq as I type this.

Dustin Brown is his next opponent. Jamaican born, brought up in Germany and with British parentage "Dreddy" is going to give Andy a lot to think about - especially if he plays his unique, and very powerful, brand of tennis.
This guy either serves and volleys (and his serve, when on, is DEVASTATING!) or he lurks along the baseline until he thinks he can mount a charge at the net.

He's a flamboyant player to watch (erm..... very 80's fluorescent lime and orange shoe laces) and when he's on song is wonderful to watch.
Unfortunately, some of his power shots end up at the bottom of the net - on his side - or go zinging out of court.

Hope Andy's team has done their 'scout-work' because Andy is really going to need his wits about him against this guy. They've never met so the H2H is 0-0; but the Jambritger has gone up over 200 ranking places in the last year and, in the words of a forum regular is a 'dangerous floater'.
:shades:

The points might be quite short when Brown is serving ...........

It'll be played on Friday - and I think a lot of people will be willing the US Open TD to make it a late match.

It'll be fun; Andy should win.
